Daedalus Theatre Company: Objectives

1. Daedalus Theatre Company is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to high quality experimental and original theatre that enables the exploration of moral, social or philosophical issues. The premise of its work is that theatre should be made from first principles rather than relying on preexisting constructs; that form is contingent on content and the work should evolve through a democratic devising process.

2. The company upholds the belief that being accessible does not mean insulting an audience's intelligence. It will strive to make plays that communicate honestly and directly with audiences and endeavour to bring its work to appropriate sections of society and, if possible, involve relevant communities in the making of the work. It will always engage with its social context and make work that acknowledges the realities of the company and its audience, location and environment.

3. The company is an artistic democracy, making work through an open and collaborative process. Teams for each project will be made up of professionals from the theatre and other areas related to the subject matter of each project: what they must all have in common is a desire to expand their practices by coming together to explore a subject through theatre. When possible, the company shall also engage local communities in the creative process.

4. Outreach will be planned as part of an integrated approach to theatre-making in which workshops, devising and company development mutually support each other. Our devising techniques will be used to enable members of the public, especially those from under-represented groups, to develop creative approaches to telling their stories. In turn this will inform our research and development and help with the evolution of a long-term strategy to bring theatre-making and outreach into as a close and symbiotic a relationship as possible.

5. The company’s day-to-day management will be on a project-by-project basis, with the producer, director(s) and production manager dividing responsibility as appropriate. These personnel may change from project to project as may other participating artists and experts. The project managers will be answerable to the company directors and board, who shall be responsible for the long-term stability and development of the company.

6. The company will strive for high standards of ethical behaviour, equality, accessibility and diversity in all its activities.
